What happens in a music session

Music is often integrated with each room's planning and learning activities. Children listen, sing, discover instruments and even make their own.

Our music teacher blends engaging tools such as puppets and sensory resources with instrument-making projects (shaker crafting is a favourite) to spark curiosity and invite every child to take part.

Each session strengthens coordination and emotional intelligence, and weaves in early concepts such as numbers, the alphabet and colours.

Children also share what they have learned with their families, performing at our Christmas party and on Graduation Day.

Why music matters in the early years

Music plays an essential role in early development. It supports the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) by enhancing communication, self-expression, listening skills and emotional growth.

In our classrooms children are invited to explore sound at their own pace. Using real instruments and rhythmic activities, they engage their senses, strengthen fine motor skills, and grow in creativity and confidence.

Music program questions

What is the Montessori approach to music education?

It fosters a child's natural sense of rhythm, melody and expression through hands-on, self-directed activities. Children explore instruments, sounds and songs at their own pace, building creativity and confidence while music becomes part of their daily learning.

What age groups take part?

The program is designed for children from toddlers to kindergarten age, with sessions that grow with them. Younger children focus on simple rhythm and movement, while older children explore more complex melodies and group performances.

How does music fit with the rest of the curriculum?

Sessions are planned alongside each room's learning program, so songs and activities reinforce what children are exploring in the classroom, from counting and letters to colours and cultures.

How can we support our child's musical development at home?

Create a home environment with simple instruments such as shakers or bells, play a wide variety of music and join in sing-alongs. Observe your child's interests and let them lead, just as we do in Montessori. We are happy to share tips during a tour.
