Why Montessori?

The Montessori method of education has been taught for over 100 years and was developed by Dr.Maria Montessori. It is a very popular choice of early childhood education all over the world, especially in Europe. There are many reasons why the Montessori method of education is beneficial to a child’s learning and development. Here are just a few:

Montessori focuses on the individual child and their own specific needs, development, progress and interests. The children learn at their own pace and proceed to the next step only when they are ready.

A child centred environment enables the children to work independently and on their own with occasional group times. The main focus for educators is the children’s learning, not the teachers teaching. As a Montessori ‘Director’, their job is to direct and guide children in their own active learning.

A responsive prepared environment enables the children to work independently and at ease. Everything is in reach for the children and the materials are always presented neatly and tidy so that they are aesthetically pleasing and inviting to the child.

The materials and exercises available to the children are always changed around to suit the children’s interests and needs.

For example, if the children have all mastered an exercise and do not find it stimulating enough it is removed from the shelf and replaced with something new. Every piece of material or exercise in a Montessori classroom has a purpose, for example the Knobbed Cylinders introduce the concepts of shape, depth and size whilst also refining fine motor skills and the child’s pincer grip.
